We use the term Podiatrist instead of Chiropodist, as this is fast becoming the more acceptable name for this profession.
If we change our gait to take pressure off of parts of our feet, it throws out other joints, muscles and tendons. Sadly there are now more children seeing Podiatrists than ever before! Generally a Podiatrist/Chiropodist knows all about foothealth and possibly a little about footwear. We are therefore delighted that some Podiatrists have chosen to know more about footwear and fitting and so we are forging greater links with their prestigious governing bodies – The Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrists and the Institute of Chiropodists & Podiatrists. There are now more than 12,800 Podiatrists in the U.K. (2015) which is proof in itself that the public do not realise the damage they are doing to their feet and other parts of their body! A practitioner can only call themselves a Chiropodist or Podiatrist if they are registered with the HCPC (Health Care Professions Council).
A good number of Podiatrists (particularly those in private practice) have started to retail footwear. The following people are Podiatrists who have gone the extra mile and studied with the Society of Shoe Fitters to gain membership. They can advise you about your feet, footwear and foot-health. It has to be said that no one brand fits all. Some brands are made on narrow lasts, others on wider lasts etc., therefore never have just one brand recommended to you, it pays to try several brands and styles (even sizes), to ascertain the best fit.

This Register is split into ‘counties in England’ alphabetically, then Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Southern Ireland and overseas.
Sadly there are not enough shoe shops or Podiatrists that wish to train their staff professionally to our recognised qualification and unbelievably some experienced shoe fitters are too afraid to take our Examination Application to prove they have the required knowledge to give an expert service! We are sorry if this is the case in your area, and hope you will encourage your local Podiatrist to make contact with us. Unless it becomes a legal obligation to have a qualification to sell shoes (which it should be, as ill-fitting footwear can affect your entire physiology), it only remains a ‘moral obligation’ to gain our qualification!
